    New body-on-frame 212 SUVs target Oman’s off-road market

Towell Auto Group has introduced the Beijing Auto Works (BAW) 212 series to Oman, bringing a purpose-built line of body-on-frame 4×4 SUVs aimed at drivers prioritising off-road capability over urban-focused crossover comforts. The launch, held in Muscat this month, brings two variants to the market: the 212 Adventurer and the flagship 212 Navigator.

The 212 nameplate traces its origins to the early 1960s as a rugged, work-oriented vehicle. The modern models uphold that heritage with a focus on mechanical durability, simple architecture and off-road systems intended for demanding terrain. Towell Auto Group will distribute the range locally and is accepting test drives at its showroom in Al Hail.

    Technical profile and certification

Both 212 models use a ladder-frame chassis constructed from high-strength steel and are equipped with features typically found on dedicated off-road vehicles rather than lifestyle SUVs. The manufacturer specifies front, centre and rear differential locks, rigid axle suspension systems and multiple terrain drive modes. Towell noted that the Oman Automobile Association (OAA) awarded a trust certification following local testing, a credential the distributor said underlines the vehicles’ suitability for the country’s varied landscapes.

    Key specifications include:

212 Adventurer – Ground clearance: 235 mm; approach/departure angles: 40.3°/35.5°; wading depth: 659 mm; climbing capability: up to 80%. Powertrain: 2.0L turbocharged engine rated at 170 kW and 390 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and 10 selectable drive modes including Sand, Rock, Mud and Wade.

212 Navigator – Ground clearance: 252 mm; approach/departure angles: 42.1°/38.3°; wading depth: 910 mm. The Navigator adds purpose-built accessories such as a snorkel, cattle bar and a trailer square mouth as standard equipment, reinforcing its intent for extreme off-road use.

Pricing announced at launch places the Adventurer from RO 11,999 and the Navigator from RO 13,999, both prices excluding VAT. Towell has emphasised showroom availability and local aftersales support as part of its roll-out.

    Market context and implications

Oman is known for diverse driving conditions that include mountainous terrain, wadis and extensive desert. That environment has created steady demand for rugged, capable 4x4s. Established models from regional favourites have historically dominated sales to bedrock off-road buyers. The 212’s entry adds a contender that leans heavily on mechanical resilience and off-road hardware rather than luxury or urban amenities.

From a distributor perspective, Towell Auto Group’s introduction of the 212 is a play to capture customers who prioritise capability and field-proven components. The OAA validation will be an asset when persuading buyers concerned about durability and local suitability, especially in a market where aftersales and parts support are critical to ownership decisions.

For buyers, the 212’s specification sheet indicates a vehicle aimed at practical, mission-oriented use. The presence of triple differential locks, generous wading depths and ladder-frame construction suggests the models are engineered more for hard off-road work and overlanding than urban commuting. That positioning will determine the 212’s competitive set and how it is marketed in Oman, and it may influence how Towell configures its sales and service network to meet buyer expectations for ruggedness and reliability.

    Distribution and next steps

Towell has opened bookings and test drives through its Al Hail showroom and is promoting the range on a dedicated website and social channels. The company said it expects the 212 to appeal to Oman’s active outdoor community and to fleet buyers who require robust off-road capability.

How the 212 performs commercially will depend on several factors: pricing competitiveness after VAT and optional equipment, the strength of local aftersales and parts support, and the brand’s ability to differentiate itself from entrenched alternatives in the region. For now, the arrival of the 212 adds another option for buyers seeking uncompromised 4×4 capability in Oman.

For test drives and more information, Towell Auto Group lists the 212 showroom in Al Hail as the primary point of contact and has published details on its official website and social accounts.
