Choithrams widens wellness assortment as healthier grocery choices gain traction

Choithrams has expanded a dedicated wellness category across its UAE stores and online platform, bringing together more than 1,000 stock keeping units that span nutrition, fitness and mindful-living products. The move, announced in late May 2026, aligns the long-established supermarket chain with a broader shift in UAE consumer behaviour toward health-focused grocery purchases.

    What the new category includes

The expanded range groups products such as protein powders, sports supplements and natural snacks alongside personal-care items and a growing selection of free-from alternatives, including gluten-free, dairy-free and refined-sugar-free options. Choithrams said the assortment features international wellness and functional-nutrition brands, naming TRIBE, Vitamin Well, Barebells and Organic Larder among those available.

“Customers today are increasingly mindful about the products they choose and how they support their lifestyle and wellbeing,” said Dinesh Pagarani, Director at Choithrams. “As demand for wellness products continues to grow, we want to make healthier choices more accessible, convenient, and part of everyday shopping for our customers.”

Market context: why wellness is moving into mainstream grocery

Across the Gulf, and particularly in the UAE, retailers have observed rising consumer interest in products that promise health, convenience and transparency. Several factors are converging to push wellness from specialist health shops into conventional supermarkets. Shoppers are increasingly seeking functional nutrition for fitness goals, managing dietary restrictions and reducing processed sugar and animal-derived ingredients. At the same time, digital shopping and personalised discovery tools have made it easier for consumers to find niche product segments.

For supermarket operators, adding a pronounced wellness section responds to both ends of the customer funnel: it helps attract health-conscious shoppers and supports higher-margin categories within the store. It also reflects a shift in what counts as everyday grocery shopping. Items once bought from specialist retailers are now integrated into weekly baskets alongside staples, household goods and fresh food.

Implications for retailers, suppliers and the supply chain

Expanding an assortment of more than 1,000 SKUs presents practical and strategic considerations for Choithrams and peers. Merchandising a wide selection of niche and free-from items demands tighter inventory management, accurate demand forecasting and supplier partnerships that can support frequent restocking without inflating waste. For imported wellness brands, retailers must also manage lead times and compliance with UAE labelling and health regulations.

For suppliers and brand owners, placement within a mainstream supermarket can open access to a broader customer base but also raises expectations for volume, promotional support and logistic reliability. The arrangement benefits international niche brands seeking local distribution, as suggested by the limited-time exclusivity for some items named in Choithrams’ rollout.

From a channel perspective, the category’s availability across stores and e-commerce underlines the importance of omnichannel retailing. Online platforms allow supermarkets to showcase a much larger assortment than physical shelf space permits, support targeted promotions and capture first-party data on wellness buyers. That data can be used to tailor assortments, cross-sell complementary items and inform private-label development if retailers choose that route.

    Competitive and strategic considerations

The UAE retail market is competitive, with major supermarket chains and specialist health retailers all targeting the same growth in wellness demand. For supermarkets like Choithrams, carving out a distinct curated range and working with recognized international brands can be a differentiator. However, competition is likely to increase on several fronts: pricing, exclusive brand tie-ups, private-label wellness lines and loyalty-programme benefits.

Operationally, maintaining product credibility will be important. Consumers who seek free-from or functional nutrition are attentive to labelling, ingredient transparency and provenance. Retailers that can provide reliable information at shelf and online, backed by compliant labelling and clear returns and quality policies, are better positioned to retain customers who test new wellness purchases.

    Outlook

Choithrams’ expansion of its wellness category underscores a larger retail trend in the UAE: health-oriented products are moving from niche to mainstream channels. For shoppers, that means greater convenience and choice. For retailers and suppliers, it means rethinking assortment strategies, logistics and omnichannel integration to capture and retain an increasingly health-conscious customer base.

As the category matures, expect supermarkets to refine their approaches through data-driven assortment optimisation, supplier consolidation and possibly more private-label options aimed at balancing price competitiveness with consumer demand for quality and transparency.

About the reporting: This article is based on Choithrams’ announcement of a wellness category expansion and places that development within broader UAE retail trends. Additional commentary or data from the company was not available at the time of publication.
