Brazil Dry-Weather Forecast Lifts Coffee Prices As Crop Risk Rises

Coffee futures surged on Wednesday, with December ICE arabica climbing to a two-week high and November ICE robusta hitting a one-week high. Arabica advanced about 4% and robusta gained around 1.4%, as traders covered short positions after forecasts raised near-term concerns about dry conditions in key growing areas of Brazil.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: December ICE arabica rose about 3.95% and reached a two-week high, while November ICE robusta gained about 1.40% and logged a one-week high.
    • Catalyst: Limited rain prospects in Brazil’s Minas Gerais region during the coming week prompted concern for the 2026/27 crop during its critical flowering stage.
    • Implication: The rally reflects a shift from recent supply-driven pressure toward weather-led risk premiums, especially for arabica.
    • Counterforces remain: Recent forecasts of record global supply and strong Brazilian and Vietnamese export volumes continue to weigh on prices.

    What drove the move

The day’s jump in coffee prices was linked to weather uncertainty in Brazil. Traders pushed prices higher as concerns intensified that dry conditions could affect prospects for Brazil’s 2026/27 crop, which is currently in the flowering stage—an early period that can influence yields later in the season.

According to meteorologist Climatempo, rainfall chances for Minas Gerais, Brazil’s largest arabica-producing state, are limited over the next week. That timing matters for market participants because arabica quality and eventual output are closely tied to how weather develops during flowering and subsequent growth.

The market reaction also included short covering, traders moving away from bearish positioning after headlines that increased the likelihood of weather stress. The move came after prices had been leaning lower in recent weeks, setting up a sharper response when bullish weather risk emerged.

Recent fundamentals: why traders were primed to react

Despite the bounce, the broader supply outlook remains mixed and has been a key factor weighing on coffee. According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the global coffee market has been trending toward surplus. On September 10, the ICO projected a record crop and a surplus, citing 2025/26 production up 4.4% year over year to a record 183.6 million bags, while consumption fell 0.9% year over year to 180.6 million bags—leaving a surplus of about 3 million bags and the first surplus in five years.

Brazil’s crop estimates have also supported the supply narrative. Data cited from Conab indicated Brazil’s 2026 production estimate was raised to 67.6 million bags from 66.7 million, including expectations for arabica to increase and robusta to decline. Such projections can limit the upside of weather-driven rallies if markets believe the overall balance sheet will remain well supplied.

At the same time, other weather inputs continue to create a counterweight. The article cited Somar Meteorologia data showing 29.7 mm of rain—112% of the historical average—in Minas Gerais for the week ended September 27, while additional commentary from Vietnam suggested improved soil moisture from recent rains that could support cherry development in the Central Highlands.

    Export flow and inventory signals

Beyond weather, supply movement through exports has remained an important pressure point. According to Cecafe, Brazil’s total coffee exports in August rose 31% year over year to 4.155 million bags, a record for the month of August. The same report indicated arabica exports rose 26% year over year to 2.87 million bags and robusta exports rose 54% to 953,592 bags.

Additional trade data referenced in the report showed Brazil’s August coffee exports rising 44.6% year over year to 206,618 metric tons, the highest in eight months. These flows can contribute to a perception of sustained availability in global markets as harvest and shipping cycles progress.

Inventory levels offered a more selective picture by variety. The report noted that ICE arabica inventories fell to a 27-year low of 217,646 bags on September 15 before rebounding to a 1.5-month high of 254,304 bags last Friday. In contrast, ICE robusta inventories climbed to a 10-month high of 5,398 lots last Thursday, a dynamic typically seen as supportive of bearish pricing pressure for robusta.

Bigger picture: weather risk competes with surplus expectations

Market participants are also balancing near-term weather headlines against longer-run production forecasts. The report cited concerns tied to El Niño conditions, pointing to the possibility of delayed rains in Brazil during September and October—months when flowering normally occurs for the 2026/27 crop. According to the U.S. Climate Prediction Center, the El Niño pattern emerging across the equatorial Pacific was expected to be among the strongest in more than 75 years, which—if realized—could raise uncertainty for parts of South America and Asia.

However, the supply ceiling for any sustained rally remains linked to official projections. The article referenced USDA forecasts that called for higher global output in the 2026–27 season, including expectations for record production and rising ending stocks. Specifically, the USDA forecast global coffee output up 6.0% to a record 189.7 million bags, with ending stocks rising to 26.3 million bags, alongside a forecast that arabica production would increase while robusta would edge lower.

For investors, the day’s rebound underscores how quickly coffee can reprice when weather risk shifts—particularly for arabica—despite evidence of abundant supply in the broader outlook.

What to watch next: Traders are likely to focus on updates to Brazil rainfall forecasts for Minas Gerais and broader conditions through the flowering window. Any additional guidance on El Niño development, alongside follow-ups to inventory trends on ICE, could influence whether Wednesday’s short-covering rally extends or fades. Longer-dated market attention may also return to upcoming crop and production updates, including future USDA and International Coffee Organization assessments.
