Tom Lee Adds To Eth Bet As Bitmine Sheds $4b On Ethereum

BitMine Immersion Technologies said it bought an additional 12,532 ether last week, increasing its Ethereum treasury and bringing the company closer to its stated accumulation target. The move comes as Ethereum’s near-term technical picture remains mixed and data cited by analysts suggests BitMine’s holdings are still sitting on large unrealized losses.

The purchase lifted the company’s treasury to about 6.028 million ETH, with Chairman Thomas Lee framing the added exposure as a bet that crypto could be entering its biggest bull cycle yet. Lee’s argument rests less on immediate price action and more on structural demand drivers, including tokenization, generational wealth transfers, supply absorption by crypto treasuries, and links between digital assets and artificial intelligence.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Ethereum is trading around $2,523, after defending the $2,400 support level.
    • Catalyst: BitMine bought 12,532 ETH, raising its treasury to roughly 6.028 million ETH.
    • Key implication: BitMine’s ongoing accumulation—potentially capped at 5% of Ethereum’s supply—could support demand if the broader market stabilizes.
    • Risk signal: The company’s ether position is associated with more than $4 billion in unrealized losses, according to Artemis data referenced in the report.

What drove BitMine’s latest Ethereum buy

According to a Monday statement from BitMine’s chairman, Thomas Lee identified four themes he believes could feed a sustained upcycle in crypto: the expansion of tokenization, wealth transfer dynamics across generations, increased supply being absorbed by digital asset treasury firms, and the evolving relationship between crypto and AI.

Lee’s central claim is that these forces could strengthen demand over time, even if shorter-term market conditions look soft. He also argued that younger generations inheriting wealth may show a stronger appetite for both cryptocurrencies and equities, providing an additional behavioral tailwind to asset demand.

Supply dynamics are a key part of Lee’s thesis. He said treasury companies’ accumulation over the past year could reduce available circulating supply. In his view, this role is more pronounced than it was during the 2019–2021 cycle, when treasuries were a less dominant factor.

BitMine’s latest purchase supports that framework by pushing the company closer to its own accumulation ceiling. Lee stated previously that BitMine would stop buying once its holdings reach 5% of Ethereum’s supply, removing a recurring source of incremental ETH demand that has supported market activity over the past year.

Market reaction: Ethereum holds key support, technical momentum remains subdued

Even with continued accumulation, Ethereum’s trading conditions have been cautious. Data cited in the report showed approximately $183.61 million in liquidations over the past 24 hours, with long positions accounting for 144.37 million.

On the daily chart, Ethereum defended $2,400 over the last day and is attempting to regain the 20-day exponential moving average near $2,592. That keeps the near-term setup neutral to bullish, but the report’s indicators point to restrained momentum.

The relative strength index is around 42, while the Stochastic oscillator is near 28, both consistent with subdued buying power as Ethereum stabilizes after a pullback. The 100-day moving average near $2,351 is cited as a deeper reference level for the broader trend.

At the time of writing, the report put ETH around $2,523. Immediate resistance is listed at $2,548, followed by the 20-day EMA near $2,592. If Ethereum sustains recovery above those levels, the next resistance areas highlighted are $2,636 and $2,781, with farther resistance at $3,075 and $3,253.

On the downside, the report said a daily close below the 50-day EMA near $2,503 could pull price action back toward a support cluster between $2,355 and the 100-day EMA at $2,351. If selling intensifies, the next deeper levels identified were $2,204 and $1,971.

What analysts see in the gap between bullish positioning and current losses

Lee’s bullish cycle thesis contrasts with the near-term technical uncertainty described in the report. While BitMine continues to add to its holdings, the company’s position is also linked to substantial mark-to-market drawdowns.

According to Artemis data referenced in the article, BitMine’s holdings carry more than $4 billion in unrealized losses. That gap underscores a common tension in large crypto treasury strategies: accumulation plans can be aligned with long-term cycle expectations, but they can still coincide with periods of pressure when prices are below cost bases.

The report also emphasized that Lee’s forecast reflects catalysts and structural demand assumptions rather than an assertion that a record bull market has already begun.

Bigger picture: supply absorption and macro-sensitive risk

BitMine’s purchase adds another data point to the growing role of crypto treasury firms in the market’s supply-demand equation. If the broader thesis holds—that more assets are locked up or absorbed by institutional-style holders—then incremental accumulation can matter, particularly during periods when liquidity and price discovery are fragile.

At the same time, Ethereum’s ability to extend gains likely remains tied to broader market conditions, including risk appetite and interest-rate expectations that influence leveraged flows. The report’s liquidation data suggests that positioning has been vulnerable, even as technical support at $2,400 has held.

Investors may look next for whether Ethereum can reclaim and hold above the 20-day EMA near $2,592, and for further clarity on whether large treasury buying continues until the 5% supply threshold. Upcoming catalysts for crypto markets typically include fresh macro data releases and any signals from broader policy expectations that affect funding conditions—factors that can influence both spot demand and derivative positioning.
