Midday Movers: Tesla, Avago, Nike, On Shares Swing On Key Catalysts

Stocks posted sharp midday moves across technology, semiconductors, and consumer names as investors digested a mix of earnings updates, deal headlines, analyst notes, and sector-specific supply news. Tesla rose on delivery figures, while Nike slid after revenue missed expectations and the company outlined additional layoffs. Semiconductor and hardware-related shares swung on reports tied to funding for artificial intelligence infrastructure and changes in hard disk drive production capacity.

    Key takeaways

    • Tesla shares rose about 5% after the company reported third-quarter deliveries above Wall Street expectations, reinforcing demand signals from its latest sales cycle.
    • Nike fell nearly 6% following a fiscal first-quarter revenue miss, with weakness cited in China and a plan to cut staff in 2027.
    • Broadcom climbed more than 3% after a Reuters report said it agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion for AI infrastructure purchases, pointing to continued investment in computing capacity.
    • Synaptics jumped 14% and ON Semiconductor rose more than 5% after ON Semi revised its buyout offer for Synaptics to $123 a share.
    • Seagate and Western Digital fell around 13% after a Nikkei report said Toshiba plans to expand hard disk drive output and invest in facilities in the Philippines, raising competitive supply concerns.

Automakers and consumer retail: deliveries versus earnings

Tesla shares rose roughly 5% after reporting third-quarter deliveries that exceeded Street expectations. According to FactSet-reported analyst consensus, Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the latest three-month period versus an expected 461,100 units, supporting the notion that demand has remained resilient heading into the next quarter.

In contrast, Nike shares slid almost 6% after the company reported fiscal first-quarter revenue that missed analysts’ estimates, according to LSEG data. Nike reported sales down 4%, attributing the decline to weakness in China. The stock also faced additional pressure after the company announced it plans to lay off staff in 2027, a move investors typically interpret as further cost restructuring amid softer demand.

Semiconductors and AI financing: deals, upgrades, and revised offers

Broadcom advanced more than 3% after Reuters reported that Broadcom has agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion to finance infrastructure purchases. Bloomberg reported that investment banks are seeking to raise $42 billion of Class A senior secured debt and $18 billion in Class B debt. The financing is designed to enable Anthropic to buy or lease chips and related computing hardware, a structure that investors may view as supportive for near- to medium-term semiconductor and data-center-related equipment spending.

Merger activity also drove outsized moves in the semiconductor supply chain. Synaptics surged 14% and ON Semiconductor rose more than 5% after ON Semi revised its buyout offer for Synaptics to $123 a share, valuing the deal at about $5.7 billion, according to the report. Revised bid prices often signal improved terms or increased willingness to close amid competing scenarios, and the market reaction suggests investors viewed the higher offer as narrowing the path to completion.

Other semiconductor-related stocks leaned on analyst coverage and sector growth assumptions. RBC Capital Markets began coverage of Allegro Microsystems with an outperform rating and a price target of $50 per share. The note implied upside of about 37% from Thursday’s close of $36, and it forecast that Allegro’s data-center revenue should more than double in fiscal 2027. RBC also pointed to expectations for Allegro’s high-efficiency motor drivers benefiting from demand tied to power supplies and network switching equipment.

RBC also upgraded Arxis to outperform from the bank’s prior view. The shares gained about 4% as the new price target of $60 implied potential upside of roughly 26% from Thursday’s close. Separately, Onto Innovation rose more than 5% after RBC initiated coverage with an outperform rating, citing expectations for rapid growth in the company’s advanced packaging business, which the bank said is on pace for 80% growth this year.

Data storage and medical devices: supply expansions and deal resets

Seagate Technology and Western Digital both fell sharply, down about 13%, after a Nikkei report said Japan’s Toshiba plans to double production capacity for hard disk drives used in data centers. The report also said Toshiba will invest $380 million to expand facilities in the Philippines. For investors, increased production capacity from a major supplier can translate into heightened supply and pricing pressure across the storage market, especially if demand growth does not keep pace.

In healthcare, Nexalin Technology’s shares dropped 26% after the company agreed to a new 10-year distribution and manufacturing deal with Inovanexa Medical Technologies. The agreement supersedes a prior letter of intent from February, according to the report. Nexalin’s Sync neurostimulation device has been approved for distribution in seven South American countries, but investors appeared focused on the revised commercial arrangement and the implications for execution and timeline.

Index moves and corporate actions: S&P inclusion and reallocation effects

Vylor rose about 2% after being named to enter the S&P 500 following its spinoff from Corteva on Thursday. Corteva, which was down about 3%, is set to move to the S&P MidCap 400. Index additions and deletions can influence trading flows through systematic funds and benchmark-tracking demand, and the market typically reacts to the immediate positioning changes around reconstitution.

    What to watch next

Investors will likely focus on whether delivery and revenue trends translate into forward guidance in upcoming earnings reports, while semiconductor buyers and data-center equipment players may watch for follow-through on AI infrastructure funding plans. In the storage industry, supply expansion headlines could further affect expectations for pricing and demand balance. Next catalysts to monitor include company earnings updates and broader market drivers such as rates and upcoming macro data releases that shape discount-rate assumptions for growth stocks.
