Corn Falls As Traders Position For Upcoming Usda Supply Report

Corn futures finished Tuesday with modest declines, extending a subdued tone in the grain complex. Most contracts were fractionally lower at the close, while cash corn prices also eased slightly, as traders weighed near-term weather signals against upcoming supply data.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: December corn closed at $5.22, down $0.01, with cash corn at $4.79 1/2, down $0.005.
    • Catalyst: Traders balanced the latest US harvest progress and NOAA precipitation outlook against expectations for the Wednesday Grain Stocks report.
    • Harvest context: Crop maturity and harvest pace matched the seasonal average, reducing near-term urgency tied to fieldwork.
    • Supply focus: Market expectations call for September 1 corn stocks to be higher year over year, though below the most recent WASDE ending-stocks outlook.
    • Regional weather: Heavy rainfall forecasts for parts of the central and western corn belt remain a key swing factor for development and logistics.

    What drove the move

Tuesday’s slight pullback in corn reflected a mix of routine progress updates and weather expectations, rather than a single dominant shock. The Monday NASS Crop Progress report showed 72% of the US corn crop mature as of September 27, with harvest at 18% complete—matching the average pace. Condition ratings were also steady, with 57% of the crop rated good to excellent, and the Brugler500 index held at 347.

Beyond crop status, NOAA’s latest precipitation outlook pointed to heavy rains across the central and western corn belt over the next several days, with additional wet weather expected later in the period in the eastern/central influence range of the forecast (as described by the QPF summary). Wetter conditions can be a double-edged factor for corn markets: they may support late crop development in dry regions, while also raising concerns about harvest timing and field access.

Market reaction and what traders are watching

As the market settled into the session, investors appeared to keep their focus on the next supply update. Ahead of Wednesday’s NASS Grain Stocks report, traders surveyed by Bloomberg were looking for September 1 corn stocks of 1.911 billion bushels. That would be well above last year’s 1.551 billion bushels, but still a modest reduction versus the WASDE estimate for 2025/26 US ending stocks.

Separately, expectations for export demand were also in the background. ANEC projected Brazilian corn exports in September at 5.4 million metric tons, down 0.57 million metric tons from the prior figure. Any shift in South American export run rates can influence global balances and the strength of basis and future spreads, even when US price action is only modest.

    Contract settlement snapshot

    • Dec 26 Corn closed at $5.22, down $0.01.
    • Nearby Cash Corn was $4.79 1/2, down $0.005.
    • Mar 27 Corn closed at $5.36, down $0.005.
    • May 27 Corn closed at $5.43, down $0.005.

    Bigger picture

The near-term corn outlook is increasingly shaped by a tug-of-war between progress that appears on-schedule and weather that could still disrupt the harvest timetable. With maturity and harvest running in line with averages, investors may be less inclined to chase immediate risk premiums—but the NOAA rainfall forecast keeps open the possibility of volatility around logistics, plant health, and yield expectations.

Over the next session, attention will likely shift to Wednesday’s Grain Stocks release, especially how the reported September 1 stocks compare with expectations for a year-over-year increase. Follow-through could also depend on updates to weather patterns and any new information on Brazil export pace.
