Bitcoin Sinks Below $77k As Binance Hack Fears Trigger $1.5b Liquidations

Bitcoin slid below the $77,000 level on Friday, extending a sharp drop that followed a fresh warning from Binance about a potential security incident. The sell-off accelerated through the derivatives market, forcing large-scale liquidation of leveraged positions and adding pressure to already fragile technical levels, with the largest digital asset trading around $76,664 late Thursday and down roughly 4.5% over 24 hours.

Binance said it was investigating a potential security issue and that customer funds were safe, but industry partners moved to freeze assets linked to the concern. According to CoinGlass, forced liquidations across cryptocurrency derivatives totaled $1.49 billion in the previous 24 hours, including $1.29 billion tied to bullish positions—figures that reflect collateral-driven closures, not a permanent loss of Bitcoin’s overall market value.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Bitcoin fell to below $77,000, trading near $76,664 after failing to hold the $80,000 area.
    • Catalyst: Binance disclosed a potential security incident, triggering freezes of linked assets and disrupting market confidence.
    • Market mechanism: Data from CoinGlass showed $1.49 billion in derivatives liquidations within 24 hours, including the majority from bullish positions.
    • Implication: Traders are now watching $75,000 and, if weakness persists, $73,000 as potential technical support zones.

    What drove the move

The immediate trigger was Binance’s disclosure on Thursday that it was investigating a potential security incident. While the exchange said customer funds were safe, the combination of uncertainty and a coordinated effort to freeze linked assets increased caution across the broader market. When confidence wobbles around exchange security, leveraged traders often reduce exposure or get forced out by risk controls, amplifying downside momentum.

According to CoinGlass, forced liquidations totaled $1.49 billion over 24 hours, affecting more than 243,000 traders. Bitcoin accounted for about $475 million of that total, and bullish liquidations represented nearly 88% of Bitcoin’s derivatives forced closures. These events typically occur when falling prices erode collateral and positions are automatically closed by exchanges.

As a result, the decline below key price levels was not solely driven by spot selling; it was also reinforced by the cascade effect of liquidation. When prices drop enough to trigger automated closures, the resulting market sell pressure can push prices lower and set off another round of liquidations.

Market reaction and technical levels in focus

Bitcoin’s repeated inability to sustain trading above $80,000 appears to have left traders positioned for a recovery that did not materialize. After slipping through $77,000, attention shifted to support levels highlighted by market research.

CryptoQuant research head Julio Moreno pointed to Bitcoin’s 365-day moving average near $77,406 as an initial support area. After Bitcoin moved beneath that zone, buyers were tested to defend a broader $76,300 to $77,000 region. Analysts noted that holding this range could help stabilize trading after the liquidation wave, but a failure to recover would likely increase focus on deeper support.

Ali Martinez said he is watching the 200-day moving average near $73,000 as a potential support level, while emphasizing that such levels are not guaranteed bottoms. In practice, moving averages can attract buyers when trend momentum remains intact, but they cannot prevent declines when forced selling dominates normal order flow.

On the upside, market participants indicated that regaining $80,000 would be a first sign sellers are losing control. A more sustained recovery toward $82,000 would be a stronger indication of demand returning, though Friday’s reversal suggests uncertainty remains elevated until confidence around the exchange incident stabilizes.

Bigger picture: risk sentiment and macro backdrop

The Binance shock arrived at a time when investors were already re-evaluating riskier assets. Recent US data and Fed messaging have kept the focus on rates and inflation dynamics. The Federal Reserve held interest rates at 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday, and September’s personal consumption expenditures inflation rose to 3.6% annually from 3.4% in August, according to the article referenced in the original reporting.

Higher Treasury yields and a firmer dollar can weigh on speculative assets by raising the opportunity cost of holding volatile risk exposure. One analyst cited by the original piece said Bitcoin’s near-term performance may depend heavily on Treasury yields, dollar moves, and broader risk sentiment.

There is, however, a potential counterpoint: US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds drew $137 million on Wednesday, extending a three-day inflow streak to about $424 million, the original reporting noted. While those figures predate the most recent plunge and do not confirm continued buying during the Friday sell-off, they suggest there was still demand in the broader investor base before the Binance-driven liquidation episode.

    What to watch next

Investors will likely focus on whether Binance and industry partners can restore confidence around exchange security and customer protection, as well as whether Bitcoin can reclaim $80,000. In the near term, traders will also watch US rate expectations and yield trends, given how macro conditions can amplify or dampen risk appetite during crypto volatility.
