Strategy, the software company formerly known as MicroStrategy, saw its shares rise on Monday after disclosing another Bitcoin purchase that further lifted its already outsized holdings. The update also reduced concerns on Wall Street that the firm’s Bitcoin-focused treasury strategy could eventually compel large-scale asset sales to meet obligations related to its preferred-share program.

According to the company’s filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Strategy bought 1,587 Bitcoin between June 8 and June 14 for roughly $100 million. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor said the acquisition was executed at an average price of $63,024 per Bitcoin.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Strategy shares rose more than 8% during Monday trading.
    • Catalyst: The company reported an additional 1,587 Bitcoin purchase funded via common-stock sales.
    • Positioning: Holdings increased to 846,842 Bitcoin, keeping Strategy among the largest corporate Bitcoin holders.
    • Debate cooled: Analysts pushed back on “death spiral” liquidation fears tied to preferred-share obligations.
    • Implication: Investors appeared reassured that funding capacity and cash reserves reduce near-term forced selling risk.

    What drove the move

The immediate driver for Monday’s rally was Strategy’s latest Bitcoin acquisition. Data from the SEC filing showed the company’s total Bitcoin holdings now stand at 846,842 BTC, acquired at an aggregate cost of about $64.1 billion including fees and expenses. With the latest purchase, Strategy controls more than 4% of Bitcoin’s maximum supply of 21 million coins, according to the report.

While the firm continues adding to its Bitcoin balance sheet, the transactions were also notable for how they were financed. The company said the purchase was funded entirely through sales of common stock under its at-the-market equity program, raising approximately $209 million through the sale of 1.73 million Class A shares during the period in question. It did not issue preferred shares during the week.

Market reaction and what investors were weighing

Investors reacted positively to the disclosure, with Strategy shares increasing by more than 8% on Monday, reflecting improved sentiment around the company’s ability to keep accumulating Bitcoin without triggering forced liquidation.

One key issue investors have monitored is the potential liquidity pressure that could arise from Strategy’s preferred-share arrangements if Bitcoin prices decline sharply. Over recent weeks, Strategy’s STRC preferred stock has traded below its $100 par value, which has limited the company’s usual funding flexibility because Strategy generally issues STRC only when its shares trade at or above par.

Monday’s news did not eliminate the broader debate, but analysts argued it lowered the probability of immediate, large-scale selling. By relying on common-stock issuance and pointing to sizable remaining issuance capacity and cash reserves, Strategy’s latest disclosures appeared to strengthen the case that the company has room to navigate volatility.

What changed in the accumulation pace

Strategy’s Bitcoin buying continues, but the company’s pace has slowed compared with earlier in the year. According to the reported figures, the acquisition of 1,587 BTC for about $100 million followed a prior week’s purchase of 1,550 BTC for $101.3 million.

The filings also underline a structural shift away from the multibillion-dollar acquisitions that characterized earlier accumulation. Even so, the company said it still has substantial flexibility: approximately $25.7 billion remains available under its common-stock issuance program, and it reported a US dollar reserve of $1.1 billion as of June 14, up from $1 billion a week earlier.

    Analysts reject “death spiral” concerns

Alongside the purchase itself, Strategy shares were supported by pushback against growing speculation that declining Bitcoin prices could force the company into selling significant portions of its holdings. The concern centers on whether obligations linked to the preferred-share program could eventually require liquidation.

In a research note issued Monday, analyst Mark Palmer dismissed what he described as a simplified “death spiral” narrative. Palmer said the scenario assumes Strategy is one bad week away from selling Bitcoin and argued that it skips intermediate steps, including the use of cash reserves intended to fund dividend payments. He specifically pointed to Strategy’s $1 billion cash reserve as a buffer before any meaningful Bitcoin sale would be considered.

The discussion gained traction after Strategy sold 32 BTC between May 26 and May 31 to help fund distributions related to its STRC preferred shares. The company said that was the first Bitcoin sale since it began accumulating the cryptocurrency in December 2022.

Palmer also argued that Strategy’s preferred securities do not create immediate liquidity pressure, adding that the path to a forced Bitcoin sell would require multiple failures before reserves would be brought into play. In his assessment, the company’s bitcoin reserve—valued at almost $55 billion, according to the note—would not quickly become part of the equation.

    Bigger picture

Strategy’s latest SEC filing reinforces that Bitcoin accumulation is still the central element of its balance-sheet strategy, even as the company is leaning more heavily on common stock funding. For investors, the key question remains whether financing flexibility and cash buffers can continue to offset pressure during periods of weaker crypto markets.

Going forward, traders will likely focus on Strategy’s next SEC updates on Bitcoin purchases, the pace of any additional equity issuance, and developments around its preferred-share trading levels. Broader market drivers—especially crypto price direction and shifts in expectations for interest rates and risk appetite—could also influence how investors weigh the company’s liquidation risk versus its continued accumulation plan.
