Hive Digital To Acquire 32 Mw Data Center In Boden, Sweden

HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd. (TSX: HIVE) (NASDAQ: HIVE) has received approval from the Boden Municipal Council to acquire the Big Boden 32 MW data center in Sweden from Bodens Utvecklings AB, the company that has owned the facility anchoring HIVE’s Swedish operations since 2018. The deal is designed to move the project from tenant status to full ownership, giving HIVE greater control over the site’s long-term direction and converting nearly eight years of local collaboration into a permanent commitment. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, with additional details to be released as the transaction progresses, according to the source.

Boden Council approval shifts HIVE in Sweden from tenant to owner

Located in Boden, the Big Boden facility will become HIVE’s property following approval by the Boden Municipal Council. HIVE said the acquisition strengthens its operational footing in northern Sweden by securing full authority over the site’s future. For the company, the change also represents a deeper local partnership: what began as a community-supported data center presence is expected to become an embedded, long-term ownership stake.

The approval marks a transition that HIVE described as its clearest signal yet that Sweden forms part of its long-term global strategy to build sovereign AI compute. In remarks tied to the acquisition, Johanna Thörnblad, Country Site President, Sweden, said the municipality had recognized what sustainable digital infrastructure could be earlier than most observers.

“We chose Boden in 2018 because the municipality understood, before most did, what sustainable digital infrastructure could look like. This acquisition is HIVE’s clearest signal yet that Sweden is part of our long-term global strategy to build sovereign AI compute.”

Béatrice Öman, Mayor of Boden Municipality, characterized the purchase as an investment in the town’s next chapter, emphasizing that HIVE has already demonstrated an interest in remaining a long-term participant.

“This is an investment in Boden’s future,”

Öman added that through the transaction the company is creating conditions for continued development in the municipality and strengthening both the business community and Boden’s ability to attract technologically advanced establishments.

Mehr-than eight years of spending and taxes in the region

HIVE said that over the past eight years, it has invested more than 960 million SEK (approximately $100 million USD) into the Boden region through local contractors and renewable energy procurement. In addition to that investment, the company reported that it has paid more than 575 million SEK (over $60 million USD) in taxes to the Swedish Tax Authority.

The company also highlighted its community involvement beyond the balance sheet. HIVE is a long-standing sponsor of the Boden Hockey League, supporting 12 youth teams as well as the club’s newly established women’s teams. It is also the naming partner of HIVE Arena. Alongside Boden Municipality and the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE), HIVE said it continues to explore recovering heat generated by the data center for broader community use—an approach the company described as transforming energy infrastructure into a civic asset.

What changes at Big Boden as it heads toward Tier III

Following closing, HIVE said it plans to advance the Big Boden data center toward Tier III infrastructure standards. HIVE described Tier III as the benchmark for the security, redundancy, and uptime required to support enterprise-scale AI and HPC workloads.

The company also tied the upgrade path to support for NVIDIA’s latest GPU architectures for AI training and inference. The Boden site would join HIVE’s broader buildout across Canada, Sweden, and Paraguay, where it is developing sovereign, renewable-powered AI infrastructure, according to the company.

HIVE did not provide specific timelines or capacity figures for the Tier III transition within the press release. It instead stated that the acquisition remains contingent on completion of customary closing conditions, with further details expected as the transaction advances.

Community and energy reuse initiatives in Paraguay and Canada

HIVE said its model of engagement is consistent across its operating footprint, describing community partnership as integrated into how it enters markets rather than something layered on top of its business operations.

In Paraguay, the company reported that it has invested directly in surrounding communities linked to its data center campuses. Its activities include electrical system upgrades and improved power infrastructure, as well as air conditioning installations across 18 schools in Valenzuela. HIVE said it has built playgrounds at four local schools, improved city blocks with LED street lighting, upgraded the municipal soccer field with a new locker room, and sponsored the community’s youth soccer program through new jerseys and equipment.

In Canada, HIVE said it participates in heat reuse initiatives that redirect thermal energy from its data centers back into local use. The company also noted support for the British Columbia Honey Producers Association as part of its environmental stewardship efforts alongside its renewable-powered operations.

Frank Holmes, Executive Chairman of HIVE, said the company’s operating thread is shared across Sweden, Paraguay, and Canada: communities hosting infrastructure are treated as partners in what the company is building. Holmes described Boden as an “exceptional partner” over nearly eight years and characterized the acquisition as a commitment to continuing that relationship through clean power, local investment, and a sustained presence.

    Company profile

Founded in 2017, HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd. describes itself as the first publicly listed company to mine digital assets powered by green energy. The company builds and operates next-generation Tier-I and Tier-III data centers across Canada, Sweden, and Paraguay, serving Bitcoin and high-performance computing clients. HIVE said it runs a dual-engine infrastructure strategy that combines hashrate services and GPU-accelerated AI computing to deliver scalable, environmentally responsible solutions for the digital economy.
