Albatha expands retail reach with Health First Pharmacy acquisition

Albatha Healthcare, the healthcare arm of UAE conglomerate Albatha Group, has acquired Health First Pharmacy from Gulf Pharmaceutical Industries (Julphar) in a deal announced on June 8, 2026. The transaction brings Albatha’s nationwide pharmacy count to 121 outlets and, according to the company, increases its daily customer reach to more than 15,000 people.

The purchase, which follows two other acquisitions by Albatha in the past year, reflects a broader strategic push by the group to consolidate pharmacy retail operations while building distribution scale and digital capabilities across the UAE.

    Deal context and corporate strategy

Health First Pharmacy, established in 2007 and previously operated under Planet Pharmacies within Julphar’s retail division, was positioned as a community-facing chain offering medicines, wellness and personal care products. Julphar said the divestment is part of a deliberate move to shed non-core retail assets and concentrate resources on pharmaceutical manufacturing and biotechnology investments.

Basel Ziyadeh, CEO of Julphar, commented that the sale aligns with the company’s plan to prioritise its manufacturing and commercialisation activities and accelerate investment in biotech and advanced production technologies at its UAE facilities.

For Albatha Healthcare, the acquisition extends an already sizable retail platform and complements its existing portfolio across pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices and clinical services. The company said it will integrate the acquired stores into its Modern Pharmacy brand and invest in digital tools, including a refreshed website and a new mobile application, to improve service accessibility.

Why scale and digital matter in UAE pharmacy retail

The UAE’s pharmacy sector has been undergoing consolidation as operators seek margin benefits from larger purchasing volumes, more efficient distribution and closer ties with manufacturers and wholesalers. Larger retail networks can also support omnichannel strategies and loyalty programmes that drive repeat business, which is increasingly important as patients shift between in-person and digital care pathways.

Albatha’s stated emphasis on a refreshed website and a mobile app points to the group’s intent to capture that omnichannel opportunity. Digital ordering, in-app prescription management and integrated delivery or click-and-collect services can raise customer retention and reduce operating friction for multi-site pharmacy chains.

Hesham Abdalla, Managing Director of Albatha Healthcare, said the move expands the group’s ability to provide patient-centred care across more communities and affirmed its commitment to supporting national health objectives. The company also highlighted alignment with national priorities under the UAE’s long-term health strategy.

    Market implications and competitive dynamics

The acquisition further concentrates retail pharmacy operations among a smaller set of larger players. That can increase Albatha’s negotiating leverage with suppliers and potentially improve margins, but it also places pressure on smaller independents and regional chains to find niches or join scale-focused consolidation themselves.

Regulatory oversight and patient safety standards will remain crucial as consolidation progresses. Pharmacy networks operating across emirates must manage compliance with local health authorities, maintain cold-chain and prescription-handling standards, and ensure continuity of care for customers migrating between brands following transactions.

From Julphar’s perspective, the divestiture frees capital and management bandwidth for investments in pharmaceutical manufacturing and biotech. The company’s comments indicate a strategic pivot to deepen its industrial capabilities rather than compete in retail operations.

    Outlook

Albatha’s latest acquisition is its third in a year, underscoring an aggressive expansion of its retail footprint. The company argues the move positions it to meet rising demand for pharmaceutical and healthcare services in the UAE, and to support a growing emphasis on preventive and community-based care.

How effectively Albatha converts scale into improved margins and customer outcomes will hinge on integration execution: aligning inventory and distribution systems, migrating store operations to its technology platforms, and retaining local customers through service continuity. For Julphar, the sale is a reallocation of capital and strategic focus toward manufacturing-led growth and biotech projects.

Observers of the UAE healthcare market say continued consolidation is likely as operators seek efficiencies and digital differentiation. The transaction highlights how corporate reshaping across production, distribution and retail is unfolding in a market where public policy and demographic trends are driving increased demand for accessible, higher-quality healthcare services.
