Zcash Surges To $530 After Exploit-Led Crash Reverses
Zcash Surges To $530 After Exploit-Led Crash Reverses

Zcash shares and tokens steadied after a sharp selloff last week tied to a reported vulnerability in the network’s codebase, with ZEC recovering from the mid-$200s to about $530. The rebound was driven by a mix of bargain buying at key support, increased trading activity, and what data from derivatives platforms points to as short liquidations.

The incident began after Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox disclosed an exploit that could have enabled malicious actors to mint unlimited amounts of ZEC, raising immediate concerns about the integrity of the blockchain’s monetary supply. ZEC subsequently fell to roughly $250 on June 5, one of its steepest declines in recent months.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: ZEC rebounded from around $250 after the exploit disclosure to approximately $530.
    • Catalyst: Investor focus shifted from the security shock toward stabilization at a major support area and forced short covering.
    • Market implication: Trading volumes surged alongside the recovery, suggesting heightened risk appetite but also potential for volatility if key technical levels fail.
    • Watch out: On-chain activity linked to shielded transactions showed large withdrawals, which may signal cautious behavior among some longer-term participants.

    What drove the recovery

Following the June 5 drop to about $250, buyers stepped in at that level, helping prevent further downside and allowing the market to rotate into a rebound. The price recovery accelerated in the days after as demand at that support point attracted additional participants.

In parallel, derivatives data suggested that short positioning was being unwound. According to data from CoinGlass, about $21 million worth of ZEC short positions were liquidated over the past two days. Such forced buybacks can amplify upward moves, particularly when price rises quickly and traders who are short are forced to close.

Trading activity also expanded as the rally gained traction. Over the past 24 hours, trading volumes nearly doubled to around $1 billion, or roughly 10% of Zcash’s circulating market capitalization, according to the figures cited in the original report.

Market reaction and the role of short covering

The combination of stabilization at support and short liquidations helped shift market dynamics from a crisis-driven selloff to a momentum-driven rebound. When liquidations occur, they can create a feedback loop: rising prices force additional short covers, which can push liquidity and order flow toward the upside.

Still, analysts warned that rallies occurring soon after major negative events can sometimes prove fragile, particularly when they are fueled more by positioning changes than by improving fundamentals.

    What on-chain data suggests

Even as price recovered, on-chain indicators pointed to potential caution among some longer-term holders. The Orchard Pool, Zcash’s largest shielded pool, reportedly saw one of its largest withdrawals on record after the exploit disclosure.

Nearly 800,000 ZEC tokens were reportedly withdrawn during that period, and the original report estimates the value at roughly $400 million at current prices. Large outflows from shielded pools can be interpreted in multiple ways, but they may reflect shifting behavior among privacy-focused users—an important consideration for a network whose value proposition depends on how effectively it supports confidential transactions.

Technical picture: momentum improves, but key levels remain pivotal

Technically, the ZEC/USD 4-hour chart has flipped bullish, with momentum strengthening in the short term. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) reportedly moved above its signal line and climbed to 77, indicating elevated bullish momentum. Rising trading volumes add to the case for continued upside pressure, at least in the near term.

However, the market is now centered on clear inflection points. The original analysis suggests that a daily close above the $500 psychological level would reinforce the bullish setup and encourage additional momentum-driven buying. Conversely, failure to hold above $500 could invite renewed selling pressure.

If bullish follow-through stalls, traders may look for a potential retest of the lower support area around $416, described as a 4-hour Transactional Liquidity (TLQ) zone. Should that level break on confirmation, the analysis projects the possibility of a faster move lower toward the $300 region, where stronger long-term support could emerge.

While Zcash’s rebound from the exploit-linked crash has been sharp, questions around network security, supply integrity, and confidence are likely to remain central to market pricing. The next phase may depend on whether demand can sustain the recovery without further destabilization from security-related uncertainty or shifts in on-chain behavior.

What to watch next: Follow through on the $500 level, any signs of renewed volatility around the $416 support area, and whether further on-chain activity in shielded pools stabilizes after the post-disclosure withdrawals. Investors will also be watching for additional updates related to the vulnerability disclosure and any further clarifications that could affect confidence in Zcash’s technical safeguards.
