Wheat Prices Slip Ahead Of The Weekend As Market Cools

Wheat futures slid on Friday, extending a soft tone across major benchmarks as traders digested weaker weekly export momentum and updated crop-condition estimates from Europe. Chicago SRW and Kansas City HRW contracts fell in the front months, while Minneapolis spring wheat also posted losses.

For the week, losses were broad: July Chicago SRW was down on the week, July Kansas City HRW posted a larger weekly decline, and Minneapolis spring wheat followed suit. The selloff came alongside positioning shifts in futures markets, as managed money added to net short exposure.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Chicago SRW July futures closed down 12 3/4 cents; KC HRW July futures ended lower; Minneapolis spring wheat also declined.
    • Catalyst: The market weighed data showing slower wheat export sales growth and updated European crop progress alongside higher spec short positioning.
    • Implication: Additional downside risk may persist if export demand remains behind USDA projections and European conditions continue to improve.
    • Key watch: Tuesday’s annual June Acreage report is set to provide fresh supply direction after the latest positioning and export signals.

    What drove the move

Export and demand indicators leaned negative. Export Sales data showed wheat sales totaling 5.522 million metric tons, down 16% from the prior year. The figure represented 26% of the USDA export projection and lagged the 28% pace of the 5-year average, a gap that can weigh on futures if traders conclude demand is arriving more slowly than expected.

Europe’s crop outlook also offered less support. France’s soft wheat conditions were estimated at 74% in good or excellent status, down 2 percentage points from the previous week, while harvest was reported at 7% complete. For durum, FranceArgiMer pegged good/excellent conditions at 58%, down 6 points week over week, with 19% of the crop harvested. While lower condition percentages can sometimes be supportive, the combination of progress in harvest and a declining condition mix did not prevent wheat from falling.

Positioning data pointed further toward pressure. According to CFTC reporting, managed money added 1,675 contracts to its net short position in the week ending June 23, bringing it to 71,206 contracts. In Kansas City wheat futures and options, the CFTC data showed specs flipping back to a net short of 1,285 contracts, a shift of 8,905 contracts.

Market reaction in Chicago, Kansas City and Minneapolis

Traders drove wheat lower across multiple delivery months on Friday. Chicago SRW contracts finished lower, including:

    • July 2026 CBOT wheat: closed at $5.78 1/4, down 12 3/4 cents.
    • September 2026 CBOT wheat: closed at $5.89 3/4, down 11 3/4 cents.

    Kansas City HRW also declined:

    • July 2026 KCBT wheat: closed at $6.11, down 9 1/2 cents.
    • September 2026 KCBT wheat: closed at $6.19 1/2, down 11 cents.

Minneapolis spring wheat posted losses as well, with:

    • July 2026 MIAX wheat: closed at $5.76 1/2, down 11 3/4 cents.
    • September 2026 MIAX wheat: closed at $6.05 1/4, down 9 3/4 cents.

    Implications for supply expectations

With trade attention shifting toward near-term supply signals, the next key event is the annual June Acreage report, scheduled for Tuesday. All wheat acres are expected at 43.8 million acres, according to the market expectations cited in a Bloomberg survey of traders. The same survey pointed to spring wheat acres at 9.5 million acres and durum at 2 million acres.

The upcoming acreage update could influence how investors reconcile the latest crop progress in France with the U.S. planting and area outlook. However, with export sales already running behind both last year and the multi-year average, traders may focus less on headline planting acres alone and more on whether tighter demand trends persist into the next USDA export cycle.

What analysts and traders will watch next

Beyond Tuesday’s acreage report, investors will likely monitor how quickly U.S. wheat exports recover relative to USDA projections. The latest export sales figures—5.522 million metric tons, down 16% year over year—provide an immediate benchmark for whether demand is staying soft or stabilizing.

European condition updates may continue to matter, particularly as harvest advances. FranceArgiMer’s reported harvest progress and the week-to-week declines in good/excellent ratings will remain part of the comparative picture for global supply and quality.

Going into the next session, wheat traders are also likely to pay attention to whether speculative positioning continues to lean net short after the managed money increase in the week ending June 23 and the Kansas City net-short flip reported in CFTC data.
