Soybean futures settled mixed as contracts firmed into the close, with the latest pricing reflecting steady support from crop-development updates, export activity, and crush demand data. While nearby August soybeans eased, Chicago strength in the deferred contracts pointed to ongoing market attention on the balance of supply across the marketing year.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: August soybeans finished slightly lower, while deferred contracts closed higher.
    • Catalyst: Weekly crop progress showed faster pod-setting versus the five-year average, alongside USDA export and crush data.
    • Market implication: Traders appeared to weigh improving field timelines against still-tight export and oil balance signals.
    • Related inputs: Soymeal and soy oil futures both rose, supporting overall soy complex sentiment.

What drove the move in soybeans

According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service weekly Crop Progress report, 88% of the US soybean crop was blooming by 8/2, and 62% had set pods—7 percentage points ahead of the five-year average for pod-setting. Condition ratings were reported at 63% good/excellent, described as down steadily, while the Brugler500 index was unchanged at 363.

Weekly export figures also factored into the market’s assessment of demand. According to USDA data compiled by FGIS, soybean export shipments totaled 343,941 metric tons (12.64 million bushels) for the week ending July 30. That was 6% below the prior week and 45.3% lower than the same week a year earlier.

On destinations, Indonesia led with 78,702 MT, followed by Mexico at 74,245 MT and Germany at 58,129 MT. For the 2025/26 marketing year, exports were reported at 39.35 MMT (1.446 billion bushels), which USDA said is 17.8% below the same period last year.

China buying interest continued to circulate through the weekend. Multiple reports indicated China purchased 14–16 cargoes of US soybeans on Friday, and USDA later confirmed additional sales tied to those flows, including 488,000 MT sold to China for 2026/27. USDA also reported 136,150 MT sold to unknown destinations.

Crush and oil balance signals added support

USDA’s Fats & Oils report showed the crush pace slightly below expectations. According to the data, soybean crushed in June totaled 217.8 million bushels, compared with an average estimate of 218.3 million bushels. The June figure was up 2.21% from May and 10.61% higher than the same month last year.

Storage and feedstock balance remained a focal point for traders. Soybean meal oil stocks were tallied at 2.096 billion pounds—down 9.45% from the prior month and up 10.7% versus the year-ago level—suggesting tighter recent month-to-month availability even as the year-over-year picture stays well supplied.

Beyond USDA, StoneX raised its forecast for Brazilian soybean production to 183.1 million metric tons, nudging the estimate up by 0.5 million metric tons from the prior number. The revision kept attention on South American supply prospects even as near-term US demand signals supported the complex.

Market reaction across the soy complex

At settlement, according to the reported contract performance, Aug 26 soybeans closed at $11.68 3/4, down 3 1/4 cents. Nearby cash soybeans were quoted at $11.47 1/2, up 6 cents.

Deferred soybeans finished higher: Sep 26 soybeans closed at $11.73 3/4, up 3 cents; Nov 26 soybeans closed at $11.92 1/4, up 4 3/4 cents; and New Crop cash was $11.31 1/2, up 3 1/4 cents.

Outside beans, the broader soy complex pushed higher. According to the report, soymeal futures were up 20 cents to $1.20. Soy oil futures rose by 101 to 157 points, with the contract movement indicating investors were also pricing firmer margins and tighter near-term oil balance.

    What to watch next

With the USDA crop timeline showing faster pod-setting than the historical average, investors will likely monitor follow-on condition trends and whether demand momentum from China and other destinations can offset weaker year-over-year export totals. Attention should also stay on upcoming USDA updates on exports, crush activity, and ending stocks, along with additional production guidance that could shift perceptions of South American supply.
