Saylor's Plan: Mstr Buys 1,031 Btc As Pace Slows
Saylor's Plan: Mstr Buys 1,031 Btc As Pace Slows

Strategy, the public vehicle led by Michael Saylor and the world’s largest public holder of Bitcoin, disclosed a fresh purchase in an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. The company bought 1,031 BTC for about $76.6 million, signaling ongoing but slower accumulation.

The deal priced at an average of $74,326 per coin, just under its historical cost basis of $75,694. With this purchase, Strategy’s holdings rise to 762,099 BTC, acquired for a cumulative cost of roughly $57.69 billion.

Market data show Bitcoin near $70,000, placing the current mark-to-market value of Strategy’s stake at roughly $54 billion and implying an unrealized loss of about 7% versus its cost base.

    Key takeaways

    • Bitcoin price around $70,000; Strategy’s aggregate position valued near $54 billion, with an unrealized loss of roughly 7% on cost.
    • Latest purchase funded entirely by proceeds from the sale of Class A common stock, marking a shift from prior rounds that relied heavily on Stretch perpetual preferred equity.
    • March activity remains substantial but slower: 41,362 BTC bought in March for about $2.93 billion, after two weeks of much larger buys.
    • The move reinforces Strategy’s commitment to Bitcoin as a long-term treasury asset, even as near-term price swings weigh on paper gains.

    What drove the move

The latest acquisition follows a period of aggressive accumulation, but at a reduced pace. In March, Strategy pursued a heavy influx of Bitcoin, including a 22,337-BTC purchase worth about $1.6 billion and a 17,994-BTC buy the week before. The bulk of that earlier spending was funded through the issuance of its Stretch (STRC) perpetual preferred equity, which generated roughly $1.2 billion—about 75% of the total in that span.

By contrast, the most recent buy was funded entirely through proceeds from the sale of Strategy’s Class A common stock. The shift in funding sources highlights a more measured approach to capital raising after a period of heavy reliance on preferred-equity financing while continuing to expand Bitcoin reserves.

    Market reaction

Strategy’s shares rose modestly in premarket trading, up about 1.7%, as investors weighed the slower pace of purchases against the company’s ongoing conviction in Bitcoin as a long-term treasury asset.

Bitcoin’s softer price environment has been a backdrop to Strategy’s latest move. The cryptocurrency averaged roughly $70,871 in the week ended March 22 and was near $71,600 at the time of writing, underscoring ongoing volatility in the asset class and its potential impact on Strategy’s mark-to-market valuation.

    Bigger picture

Strategy’s action fits into a broader pattern among corporate treasuries seeking hard assets amid macro uncertainty and crypto market volatility. While Bitcoin’s price has fluctuated, Strategy has consistently framed its holdings as a long-term reserve asset, a stance reinforced by sizable purchases in March despite near-term paper losses.

In March alone, Strategy added 41,362 BTC, spending about $2.93 billion, underscoring a persistent, if moderated, appetite for Bitcoin across volatile price cycles. The company’s stance remains that Bitcoin serves as a treasury diversification tool, even as market conditions influence annualized cost bases and portfolio sensitivity to price moves.

What to watch next: the cadence of upcoming Bitcoin purchases, any further shifts in the funding mix, and how Bitcoin price dynamics influence Strategy’s aggregate valuation. Investors will also monitor any additional disclosures or guidance related to the company’s cryptocurrency treasury program.
