Poland Weighs Crypto Bills As Zondacrypto Probe Heightens Pressure
Poland Weighs Crypto Bills As Zondacrypto Probe Heightens Pressure

Poland’s Sejm began reviewing four cryptoasset bills on Tuesday, stepping into a decisive phase of the country’s policy on digital assets while deferring consideration of an opposition proposal that would ban the sector entirely. According to Invezz, the measures originate from Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government, President Karol Nawrocki, the Poland 2050 party, and the Confederation party, with second readings expected on Thursday. Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty said lawmakers would tackle the four active drafts before addressing a separate ban proposal.

With the European Union’s July 2026 transition deadline under MiCA looming, Poland—one of the bloc’s few members still arranging a full MiCA alignment—faces renewed pressure to move swiftly on crypto regulation. The EU framework is designed to standardize oversight of cryptoassets and reduce cross-border regulatory fragmentation, a goal that Poland has yet to fully execute.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: No evident market movement yet as policy debate unfolds.
    • Catalyst: Parliament opens debate on four crypto bills while deferring a separate ban proposal; MiCA alignment remains contested on enforcement authority.
    • Key implication: Regulatory uncertainty persists for Poland’s crypto sector, affecting hundreds of entities and investor sentiment as the MiCA transition nears.
    • Context: The fight unfolds as EU-wide rules approach implementation and lawmakers clash over regulator powers and enforcement tools.

    What drove the move

According to Invezz, the central dispute centers on how aggressively regulators should be empowered to police crypto activity. The Ministry of Finance draft would grant the Polish Financial Supervision Authority, known as the KNF, the power to impose fines up to PLN 25 million for obstructing inspections. President Nawrocki’s proposal keeps the cap at PLN 20 million and adds nuanced conditions for blocking crypto-related accounts. Separately, initial readings have been opened for parliamentary proposals from the Poland 2050 and Confederation factions, broadening the legislative mix and the points of contention.

At the same time, opposition lawmakers from Law and Justice, known as PiS, have filed a separate proposal for a nationwide ban, adding pressure to the process. Speaker Czarzasty described the political atmosphere around crypto regulation as “some kind of devil’s dance,” highlighting concerns about potential ties between politicians and the sector as lawmakers navigate the policy drift.

    Zondacrypto probe fuels political pressure

According to Invezz, the ongoing Zondacrypto investigation has become the focal point of political risk in Poland’s crypto policy. The exchange is under a criminal probe for allegations including fraud, money laundering, and interference in political processes. Polish prosecutors have received more than 1,500 complaints from affected investors, with losses estimated at no less than PLN 350 million. Investigators are also examining claims that the exchange sought to influence politics through campaign financing tied to potentially illicit funds.

Earlier, Prime Minister Tusk warned that corruption tied to crypto platforms could undermine trust in Poland’s financial system and electoral integrity. Zondacrypto founder Przemysław Kral has said in a public video that political pressure, regulatory interventions and media coverage contributed to a surge in withdrawals, complicating containment efforts.

Bigger picture for Poland’s crypto framework

As lawmakers press ahead, the regulatory outlook remains uncertain for Poland’s more than 1,400 registered crypto-related entities that could be affected if a unified framework is not in place before the EU transition deadline. MiCA is designed to harmonize oversight across the bloc, reducing cross-border fragmentation and clarifying rules for exchanges and service providers. The ongoing debate over enforcement authority highlights the broader risk environment for Poland’s crypto sector and for EU-wide regulatory alignment.

Investors are watching how the dispute will shape licensing, enforcement, and cross-border activity, and whether the Zondacrypto case will accelerate or slow regulatory clarity. The outcome could influence capital allocation and compliance costs for Poland’s crypto firms, particularly those with cross-border operations in the European market.

Looking ahead, lawmakers are set to continue the committee process with further readings of the four active crypto bills expected this week. The Zondacrypto probe and the broader regulatory debate will remain a dominant backdrop to policy discussions, while the EU’s MiCA timetable will constrain how Poland navigates enforcement, licensing, and custody rules. For investors, the key watchpoints are regulatory clarity on enforcement powers, the timetable for a unified framework, and any developments in the Zondacrypto case that could signal broader political risk for Poland’s crypto ecosystem.
