Hog Prices Rebound Midweek As Traders Step In On Wednesday

Lean hog futures climbed during Wednesday trading, with most contracts posting gains of about 82 cents to $3 in midday action. The upward move followed USDA data showing a national base hog price of $96.89 and a higher CME Lean Hog Index of $91.66 as of July 2.

USDA’s pork carcass cutout value also edged higher in the agency’s Wednesday morning report, supporting near-term sentiment across the complex. Markets will now be watching slaughter trends and how demand data filters into carcass values over the rest of the week.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Lean hog futures were up in most contracts during midday trade, ranging from roughly +$0.82 to +$3.
    • Catalyst: USDA reported a national base hog price of $96.89 and a Wednesday morning pork carcass cutout value of $98.98.
    • Supporting data: USDA estimated Tuesday federally inspected hog slaughter at 479,000 head, exceeding both the prior week and the year-ago week.
    • Implication: Higher cutout values and a firmer index helped counterbalance expectations around increased slaughter volumes.

    What drove the move

Several USDA and exchange-linked benchmarks pointed in the same direction for the hog market on Wednesday:

    • National base hog price: USDA’s national base hog price was reported at $96.89 in the Wednesday morning timeframe.
    • CME Lean Hog Index: The index rose 11 cents on July 2 to $91.66, indicating modest strength in the underlying cash-equivalent measure.
    • Pork carcass cutout: USDA estimated the pork carcass cutout value at $98.98, up $1.07 versus the prior reported level in the Wednesday AM report.

USDA also noted that among the primals reported low, only the loin and picnic were down, while the overall cutout remained firmer. That mix matters for traders because the cutout acts as a proxy for market value across the wholesale pork side.

    USDA slaughter data adds context

Wednesday’s futures tone was also shaped by slaughter expectations published by USDA:

    • Tuesday slaughter: Federally inspected hog slaughter was estimated at 479,000 head.
    • Weekly total: The weekly total reached 942,000 head.
    • Comparison to prior periods: The weekly figure was 24,000 head higher than the week prior and 3,884 head above the same week last year.

In other words, the supply backdrop remains heavier on a year-over-year basis, which can limit how far gains can extend if demand does not keep pace. Still, the cash and carcass indicators provided support early in the session, helping futures hold positive momentum.

    Market reaction and contract performance

By midday Wednesday, the gains were concentrated across the curve, with notable strength in later-dated contracts. The reported levels included:

    • July 26 hogs: $94.275, up $0.825.
    • August 26 hogs: $99.025, up $2.100.
    • October 26 hogs: $84.650, up $3.000.

The higher moves in some later maturities suggest traders were pricing a firmer balance sheet between pork values and hog costs in the near-to-medium term, rather than treating the day’s strength as strictly short-covering.

    What to watch next

Going forward, market participants will likely focus on whether continued strength in the pork carcass cutout can offset the implications of larger slaughter volumes. Additional USDA updates on supply and demand—along with any subsequent revisions to index and cutout components—will be key for determining whether Wednesday’s gains can hold into the close.
