Hive’s Buzz Hpc Inks $220m Sovereign Ai Gpu Cloud Deal
Hive’s Buzz Hpc Inks $220m Sovereign Ai Gpu Cloud Deal

HIVE Digital Technologies is moving further into the sovereign AI infrastructure market through a new GPU cloud arrangement designed to keep compute and model operations within Canadian borders. The deal, executed by HIVE’s BUZZ High Performance Computing subsidiary, pairs Bell’s data center and connectivity platform with Cohere’s enterprise AI capabilities, supported by a large NVIDIA-based GPU cluster.

What HIVE’s BUZZ HPC deal covers

According to the company, BUZZ HPC has signed a three-year GPU cloud contract with a total value of approximately USD $220 million. The arrangement is intended to support production-grade “sovereign AI” infrastructure for Canadian enterprise and government customers, combining:

    • Bell AI Fabric, including national data center capacity and connectivity components.
    • Cohere, supplying security-first, enterprise-focused AI solutions and large language model capabilities.
    • BUZZ HPC, providing GPU cluster infrastructure and cloud services for model training, fine-tuning, and deployment.

The implementation location will be Bell’s purpose-built facility in Merritt, British Columbia, where BUZZ HPC will deploy the computing layer expected to run Cohere’s foundation models and related enterprise AI workloads.

    GPU hardware and network stack

The contract’s stated compute scale is tied to NVIDIA infrastructure. HIVE says BUZZ HPC has procured NVIDIA AI systems based on 2,304 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs, delivered as rack-scale systems intended to follow NVIDIA reference architecture standards.

On networking, BUZZ HPC plans to use NVIDIA Quantum InfiniBand scale-out technology to support communication between GPUs in the cluster. The company also references advanced liquid cooling as part of the deployment design.

For investors and enterprise buyers, this matters because many “sovereign AI” offerings are not just about model hosting, they depend on tightly integrated compute and networking to achieve consistent throughput for demanding workloads. The combination of a large GPU pool with scale-out interconnect is a practical foundation for distributed training and high-volume inference, assuming the software stack and operational processes are aligned.

    Timing and expected operational ramp

HIVE did not provide a single go-live date in the announcement, but the company included forward-looking commentary that references a deployment timeline late 2026 to early 2027. It also cited a commercial performance expectation around contracted HPC revenue and projected annual recurring revenue contribution associated with the NVIDIA deployment.

As with many infrastructure buildouts, actual schedules can shift due to procurement lead times, commissioning timelines, power availability, and integration testing. Buyers typically evaluate not only planned capacity but also operational readiness, including monitoring, security controls, and service-level governance suitable for regulated environments.

Why “sovereign AI” is becoming a procurement focus

Across North America and Europe, governments and large enterprises have increasingly emphasized data residency, governance, and supply-chain risk management for AI systems. “Sovereign AI” strategies often aim to keep sensitive data and compute under domestic policy frameworks, which can include requirements around where systems run and how access is controlled.

HIVE’s stated framing ties the contract to that policy direction, noting Canada’s federal AI strategy and the objective of keeping Canadian data secure under Canadian control. Bell provides the national connectivity and data center footprint, while Cohere brings a model and enterprise deployment approach oriented toward security and deployment flexibility. BUZZ HPC’s role centers on the compute layer that turns infrastructure into usable AI capacity.

Still, buyers should treat such arrangements as multi-layer stacks rather than single-product announcements. The value proposition depends on integration across hardware, networking, orchestration and security tooling, and the operational model for serving enterprise and government customers.

    Financing and system integration

HIVE said it will fund the purchase of the NVIDIA Grace Blackwell rack-scale systems using proceeds from an earlier convertible note financing completed in April 2026. The company also named Hypertec as the organization delivering a bespoke GPU server solution, covering procurement, system integration, and installation and commissioning support.

In HPC deployments, the distinction between buying GPUs and delivering a functioning cluster is significant. System integration work influences performance outcomes, reliability, and time-to-service, especially when liquid cooling and scale-out networking are part of the design.

Industry implications for Canada’s AI infrastructure

This contract adds another data point to Canada’s push to industrialize AI infrastructure rather than relying solely on external compute providers. A deal that bundles connectivity, data center operations, enterprise model capabilities, and a large GPU cluster under one deployment plan can be attractive to customers that want clearer governance boundaries.

For HIVE and BUZZ HPC, the announcement also reinforces a strategy positioned around building and operating what it calls “AI factories,” pairing large-scale GPU capacity with sustainability-oriented operational design. For Bell, the agreement extends the role of its AI-focused platform into compute capacity that is intended to remain within Canadian borders.

Whether this translates into durable market share will depend on customer adoption, utilization rates, and the ability to deliver reliable services as additional GPU clusters come online. The company’s own forward-looking statements highlight that projected revenue and capacity utilization are subject to typical execution and demand risks.

    Bottom line

HIVE’s BUZZ HPC says it has secured a roughly USD $220 million, three-year GPU cloud contract that brings together Bell AI Fabric, Cohere’s enterprise AI, and a large NVIDIA-based GPU cluster deployed at a Bell facility in British Columbia. The deal reflects the broader shift toward sovereign AI procurement, where infrastructure, governance, and operational control are increasingly treated as essential components of enterprise AI deployment.
