Cotton Slides Wednesday As Prices Extend Downtrend
Cotton Slides Wednesday As Prices Extend Downtrend

Cotton prices fell in early Wednesday trading, extending losses after Tuesday’s decline. By the open, cotton futures were down 250 to 350 points, following a turnaround in which Tuesday’s settlement losses totaled 115 to 169 points. Market moves were also shaped by a firmer U.S. dollar and higher crude oil, both of which can influence commodity demand and pricing dynamics.

At the same time, the latest U.S. crop outlook showed ongoing boll development and slightly improved crop condition metrics, while quality concerns remained visible in key production regions. ICE-certified cotton stocks were unchanged, and the Seam reported sales for the Aug. 31 period.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Cotton futures were lower by 250 to 350 points in early Wednesday trading after Tuesday’s settlement losses.
    • Catalyst: A mix of U.S. crop progress data showing bolls setting and condition ratings improving modestly, alongside steady certified stock levels.
    • Key implication: Improved crop development may temper near-term price support, even as quality ratings remain uneven.
    • Market signal: The U.S. dollar index strength and higher crude oil added to the broader macro backdrop influencing commodity pricing.

    What drove the move

Fresh U.S. crop data released for the week ending Sunday pointed to further progress in cotton development. According to Weekly Crop Progress figures, 89% of the U.S. cotton crop was setting bolls, with 29% of the crop showing opened bolls as of that reporting date.

Crop condition improved modestly. Condition ratings were reported at 39% good/excellent, up 2 percentage points on the week. However, performance varied by region: the Brugler500 index fell another 2 points to 302, as poor/very poor ratings increased by 3%. Texas ratings were also reported weaker, slipping an additional 2 points to 260, suggesting that not all growing areas are showing the same level of improvement.

ICE stocks, the Seam and pricing benchmarks

Fundamental supply indicators remained stable in certain areas. ICE certified cotton stocks were reported unchanged, with certified stocks at 63,178 bales.

Demand and sales reporting also came through. The Seam said it recorded sales of 75 bales on Aug. 31 at an average price of 85.63 cents per pound.

Meanwhile, the Adjusted World Price was raised by another 190 points last week to 71.52 cents per pound, indicating continued adjustment in the global reference for cotton pricing.

Contract performance and how traders positioned

On Tuesday’s close, October 26 cotton settled at 90.01, down 169 points, and was reported down 350 points in early Wednesday trading. December 26 cotton closed at 91.55, down 159 points, and was trading down 298 points early Wednesday. March 27 cotton closed at 93.68, down 146 points, and was down 290 points early Wednesday.

The magnitude of the early session declines relative to Tuesday’s settlement indicates that downside pressure persisted beyond the prior day’s move rather than merely reflecting an overnight adjustment. Traders appeared to be balancing improving national crop condition signals and ongoing boll-setting progress against persistent regional quality pressure highlighted by the Brugler500 deterioration and weaker Texas ratings.

Bigger picture: macro factors alongside crop fundamentals

The commodity tape also reflected broader macro variables. Crude oil was reported $4.92 per barrel higher on the day, while the U.S. dollar index was up by $0.235. A stronger dollar can weigh on dollar-denominated commodities by making them more expensive for buyers using other currencies, and it often influences investor appetite for risk assets tied to commodity demand.

With cotton trading as a global agricultural product, investors typically monitor both physical supply/demand signals—such as stock levels and reported sales—and macro drivers, including currency movements and energy prices. Wednesday’s softness suggests the market is prioritizing the implications of crop development progress and uneven quality outcomes.

What to watch next: Investors will likely look for follow-through in cotton futures as the market digests current crop progress and condition trends. Upcoming data updates on crop ratings and development, along with any fresh shifts in the U.S. dollar and broader commodity sentiment, could be key to determining whether Wednesday’s declines stabilize or extend further.
