Corn futures slid lower Friday alongside broader grain prices, with contracts down modestly by midday as traders balanced spillover weakness from wheat, near-term weather expectations, and month-end positioning.

Cash corn prices also eased: the CmdtyView national average for cash corn fell to $4.08 1/4, down 8 1/4 cents from the prior session.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Corn futures and cash corn were lower by midday, with losses of roughly 6 to 8 cents across multiple contract months.
    • Catalyst: Pressure came from weakness in wheat, rain forecasts affecting parts of the central U.S., and month-end trading dynamics.
    • Implication: Despite solid export sales progress, short-term weather and cross-market sentiment continue to outweigh the support for prices in the near term.

    What drove the move

Trading remained choppy as corn followed a softer tone across the grain complex. The report cited spillover from wheat, with additional near-term headwinds tied to expected rain and month-end pressure.

Weather coverage pointed to rainfall in overnight periods across parts of the Northeast, the Dakotas, and Minnesota. Looking ahead, the next seven days were forecast to include roughly 1 to 2 inches across much of Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, with a greater share of the precipitation expected early in the period.

    Market reaction

By midday, corn futures were broadly lower across the curve:

    • Sep 26 Corn: $4.38 3/4, down 7 cents
    • Nearby Cash: $4.08 1/1, down 8 1/4 cents
    • Dec 26 Corn: $4.61 3/4, down 6 3/4 cents
    • Mar 27 Corn: $4.77 1/2, down 7 cents
    • New Crop Cash: $4.10 1/4, down 8 1/2 cents

The uniform decline across nearby and deferred contracts suggested the move was driven more by aggregate sentiment and positioning than by any single contract-specific development.

Export sales support remains in focus

Even as futures eased, export sales data pointed to continued demand momentum. According to the report, old-crop corn sales totaled 86.975 MMT, which it described as 103% of the USDA figure and ahead of the pace from recent years. The report also said accumulated shipments reached 76.373 MMT, or 90% of the USDA export projection.

For new-crop corn, the same data showed sales at 8.624 MMT, described as 0.1% above the same period last year. That relatively small year-over-year differential indicated demand was not accelerating rapidly, but remained supportive enough to limit downside on dips.

Bigger picture: weather and positioning still matter

With rain prospects on the table across several major corn-growing regions, traders were weighing how improved moisture may affect planting progress and early crop conditions. At the same time, month-end effects can influence liquidity and flows, often amplifying day-to-day moves even when fundamental indicators—like export sales—are mixed.

For now, the market appears to be treating the export data as background support while reacting more immediately to cross-commodity weakness and the near-term precipitation outlook.

Looking ahead, investors will likely focus on how the forecast evolves over the next week and whether additional export updates confirm continued demand. Any follow-through in wheat-related pressure and incremental weather changes could determine whether corn stabilizes or extends its decline into the next trading session.
