According to Invezz, Coins.ph has expanded its QRPh crypto payments functionality to include Bitcoin and Ethereum, broadening a system that already supported stablecoins such as USDT. The move places two of the world’s most widely used cryptocurrencies into the Philippine national payments network, aligning with the central bank’s initiative to foster interoperable, real‑world crypto usage through the QRPh framework.

The integration enables payments at roughly 700,000 QRPh‑enabled merchants across the Philippines by scanning the national QR code standard developed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. At checkout, crypto balances are automatically converted into Philippine pesos, eliminating the need for users to perform manual conversions. This seamless, single‑checkout experience heightens usability and could accelerate crypto adoption in everyday transactions.

Coins.ph had previously rolled out QRPh‑compatible crypto payments with USDT, marking a landmark moment for the country’s financial infrastructure by enabling direct crypto payments via the national QR system. The latest expansion adds Bitcoin and Ethereum to the mix, broadening the range of assets that can be used at the point of sale without leaving the QRPh network.

The emphasis on stablecoins remains a core pillar of the system, with the ability to move between fiat and digital assets within a single checkout flow. The automatic conversion feature is designed to minimize friction for both merchants and consumers, supporting the broader goal of making crypto a practical part of daily commerce rather than a niche product.

The development comes as the Philippines remains one of the world’s most active crypto adoption markets. The country is often cited as a leading hub for digital assets, with estimates suggesting more than 15 million crypto users, or roughly 13.4% of the population. The remittance landscape also underscores the appeal of crypto‑enabled payments: the Philippines ranks among the world’s largest remittance recipients, with annual inflows around $38 billion. Stablecoins and cross‑border digital payments are increasingly used to move value efficiently and spend it locally without extra conversion steps.

Wei Zhou, CEO of Coins.ph, framed the expansion as a meaningful evolution of the wallet platform. “The addition of new tokens to our QRPH crypto payments feature is a great achievement following the landmark introduction of USDT payments for the Philippine financial landscape. We aren’t just adding new tokens; we are redefining what a digital wallet can do. This is the future of finance in action and we’re making the world’s most popular cryptocurrencies a functional part of the Filipino daily life.”

This expansion is particularly relevant in the Philippine context, where remittance inflows are a lifeline for many households and where financial inclusion remains a key policy objective. The QRPh framework, designed to be secure and interoperable across financial institutions and merchants, provides a pathway for broader participation in digital payments without a heavy onboarding burden for users or merchants.

Coins.ph operates as a licensed Virtual Asset Service Provider and Electronic Money Issuer under Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) regulation, underscoring the regulatory framework that supports crypto integration into everyday commerce. QRPh is the country’s national QR code standard, established to promote secure, interoperable payments across the financial system and to standardize acceptance across banks, e‑money issuers and merchants. The Philippines, widely cited as a frontier market for crypto adoption, continues to push the boundaries of how digital assets interact with real‑world payments and cross‑border transfers.

From a market standpoint, the update signals continued momentum in the convergence of crypto and retail payments in a regulated environment. While the expansion does not correspond to a tradable asset move, it reflects a broader macro trend toward on‑ramps for digital currencies in jurisdictions with large remittance corridors and active consumer wallets. The Philippines’ approach to QRPh—emphasizing a single, interoperable code that can be used by diverse financial service providers—may influence similar initiatives in other markets seeking to balance crypto utility with consumer protection and payments reliability.

Analysts and industry observers have noted that real‑world usage—especially through a nationwide QR network—can help stabilize demand for crypto as a payment method by expanding acceptance and reducing the friction points that have historically limited merchant participation. The private‑sector rollout complements ongoing conversations around central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and digital payment reforms, illustrating how a regulated environment can integrate crypto assets into everyday financial activity without requiring consumers to navigate complex wallets or multiple platforms.

Beyond the Philippines, the move resonates with broader themes in global finance: the push to reduce settlement times and costs in cross‑border payments, the growing role of stablecoins as on‑ramps and spendable value, and the importance of regulatory clarity in fostering consumer trust. For investors and practitioners following the crypto payments space, Coins.ph’s expansion provides a concrete data point on the viability of crypto payments at scale in a large, cash‑driven economy and highlights the potential for similar models to emerge in other regional markets with strong remittance ties and active digital wallets.

Looking ahead, the key questions for observers are how merchants respond to the expanded asset mix, whether other tokens will be added to the QRPh payments roster, and how BSP and other regulators monitor this integration as adoption grows. Updates on merchant uptake, user engagement, and any further token additions will be watched closely for signals about the pace of real‑world crypto integration in the Philippines and its potential spillovers to adjacent markets and payment ecosystems.
