Coffee Futures Rise As Weather Risks Tighten Global Supply Outlook
Coffee Futures Rise As Weather Risks Tighten Global Supply Outlook

Coffee futures ended higher on Wednesday, with September arabica rising while September ICE robusta gained modestly and touched a one-week high. Robusta strength came as rain prospects for Vietnam’s Central Highlands were dialed back, while arabica support reflected continued delays in Brazil’s harvest progress and a fresh drawdown in ICE arabica stockpiles.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: September arabica coffee finished up 0.86%, while September ICE robusta closed up 0.96%.
    • Catalyst: Robusta climbed after weather forecasts suggested fewer rains for Vietnam’s main producing region; arabica was underpinned by slower Brazil harvesting and lower exchange stocks.
    • Supply signals: Co-op and industry updates pointed to behind-schedule harvest pace in Brazil, but USDA projections still expect global output to rise.
    • Inventory mix matters: ICE robusta inventories rose into the mid-4,000 lots range recently, while ICE arabica inventories fell to a 2.5-year low.
    • Implication: The market is balancing near-term weather and inventory changes against longer-horizon USDA expectations for larger global supplies.

    What drove the move

Robusta futures moved higher after updated rain chances were reduced for Vietnam’s Central Highlands, the country’s core coffee-growing area. Vietnam’s monsoon season typically runs from May to October, and the market appeared to price a less disruptive near-term weather outlook for crop development.

Arabica gained support on two fronts. First, market data on Brazil’s harvest progress suggested continued delays. According to figures cited by the market, the Cooxupe co-op reported its harvest completion at 67.3% as of July 31, compared with 74.2% at the same point a year earlier. Separately, Safras & Mercado indicated Brazil’s 2026/27 harvest was 64% complete as of July 15, behind last year’s comparable 77% and below the five-year average of 70%.

Second, exchange inventories reinforced the upward bias for arabica. ICE arabica coffee inventories fell to a 2.5-year low of 251,417 bags on Wednesday, providing additional technical and supply support for front-month arabica.

    Market reaction and inventory signals

While robusta prices rose to a one-week high, inventory trends have been a counterweight. ICE robusta inventories were cited as having climbed to a 4.25-month high of 4,254 lots on July 22, though they were described as slightly lower at 4,206 lots on Wednesday.

Arabica’s inventory picture was comparatively tighter. The decline to a multi-year low contrasted with robusta’s more comfortable inventory position, helping explain why arabica’s rally had a stronger inventory-backed component even as both markets moved higher.

Weather also intersected with harvest timing beyond Vietnam. Somar Meteorologia reported that no rain fell in the week ended August 2 in Brazil’s Minas Gerais, a condition that may help speed up the pace of Brazil’s coffee harvest.

Supply outlook: USDA projections versus weather risk

Despite Wednesday’s price gains, the broader supply outlook remains mixed. The latest USDA biannual forecast, referenced in the report, was described as bearish. On July 22, the USDA projected global coffee output in the 2026–27 season would rise by 6.0% (to 189.7 million bags), driven mainly by improved growing conditions in Brazil. The USDA also projected global arabica production to increase 12% year over year, while robusta production was expected to decline 0.7% year over year. World ending stocks were projected to rise by 1.9 million bags to 26.3 million bags.

Earlier USDA/FAS guidance cited in the same summary pointed to a record Brazil crop for 2026/27 of 71.9 million bags, up 14% year over year.

At the same time, weather risk signals continued to support prices for the medium term. Concerns linked to an El Niño pattern were described as bullish for coffee, particularly around Brazil. According to a trader assessment cited as Commercial, El Niño could delay rains in Brazil during September and October—months associated with flowering—potentially weighing on the 2026/27 crop. Separately, the US Climate Prediction Center said the El Niño developing across the equatorial Pacific last month is likely to be among the strongest in more than 75 years, raising the possibility of later-season disruptions through floods, droughts, and temperature swings that could affect production in Asia and South America.

    What to watch next

Investors will likely track whether weather forecasts for Vietnam’s Central Highlands continue to shift and how quickly Brazil’s harvest progresses after the latest dryness in Minas Gerais. On the fundamentals side, the tension between near-term inventory and harvest pacing versus the USDA’s outlook for higher global production remains central. With USDA guidance already in focus, the next key catalysts are additional weather updates tied to El Niño and any follow-on revisions to output expectations for the 2026/27 crop.
