Live cattle futures finished Wednesday’s session higher across the curve, with most contracts gaining 62 cents to $1.35 by the close. Trading activity in the cash market had not yet begun for the week, while feeder contracts also ended up on the day. Boxed beef prices weakened in USDA’s afternoon update, adding a note of caution for near-term wholesale margins.

    Key takeaways

    • Price move: Live cattle contracts closed higher, ranging from a gain of $0.625 to $0.800 by contract maturities; feeder cattle futures also ended higher.
    • Catalyst: USDA boxed beef prices fell in the Wednesday afternoon report, while futures followed through with upward closes.
    • Cash market status: The Central Stockyards Fed Cattle Exchange reported no sales, with bids posted for the offered cattle.
    • Supply data watch: USDA estimated Wednesday federally inspected slaughter at 125,000 head, leaving the week-to-date total even with the prior week and slightly lower versus last year.
    • Implication: With wholesale prices softer even as futures rose, market participants are likely balancing current pricing pressure against expected cattle supply and demand dynamics.

    What drove the move

Wednesday’s live cattle strength came despite weaker wholesale boxed beef pricing. According to USDA’s afternoon report, Choice boxed beef boxes were down $1.62 to $315.59 per hundredweight, while Select was down $2.04 to $283.20 per hundredweight. The Choice-to-Select spread widened to $32.39, reflecting a larger price gap between the two grades.

On the supply side, USDA estimated Wednesday federally inspected cattle slaughter at 125,000 head. That brought the week-to-date total to 369,000 head, which USDA said is even with the previous week and down 4,798 head from the same week last year.

    Market reaction in futures

Live cattle futures were firmer at the close, with multiple contracts settling above their prior session levels:

    • Dec 24 Live Cattle closed at $185.400, up $0.625.
    • Feb 25 Live Cattle closed at $186.725, up $0.775.
    • Apr 25 Live Cattle closed at $187.800, up $0.800.

Feeder cattle futures also closed higher. Wednesday feeder contract values finished up between $1.15 and $2.20, according to the session close:

    • Nov 24 Feeder Cattle closed at $247.700, up $1.550.
    • Jan 25 Feeder Cattle closed at $244.025, up $1.675.
    • Mar 25 Feeder Cattle closed at $241.750, up $1.250.

The CME Feeder Cattle Index was down a penny to $250.72 as of November 5, adding another reference point as futures rose on Wednesday.

Cash market and USDA data in focus

Cash trading had yet to start for the week, according to the report. In the Wednesday morning Central Stockyards Fed Cattle Exchange, there were no sales on the 3,044 head offered. Bids were reported in the $185 to $187 range, but the absence of executed transactions suggested market participants were still aligning on price.

With USDA slaughter totals showing no week-to-week change but a year-over-year decline, the reported supply profile remained a key datapoint for traders. Even as wholesale prices fell, the combination of steady slaughter and softer year-ago comparisons can influence expectations for near-term cattle availability and downstream demand.

    What to watch next

Investors in cattle markets will likely track when cash trading begins and whether booked deals emerge around the bid levels reported at Central Stockyards. The next signals to monitor include continued USDA boxed beef price updates, additional slaughter and supply estimates, and whether the CME Feeder Cattle Index continues to diverge from the direction of futures prices.
