Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) shares surged on Friday as a broad rally in Bitcoin revived profitability on the company’s colossal cryptocurrency hoard. The stock climbed about 16% at one point and was roughly 10% higher on the day, extending a five-session run that has lifted the week’s gain well above 30%, according to market data.
Bitcoin itself rose nearly 4% over the past 24 hours, briefly hovering near $78,000 and trading above $77,400, helping push Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings back into positive territory.
Bitcoin rally lifts Strategy’s holdings
Strategy’s balance sheet continues to be dominated by Bitcoin. Data from BitcoinTreasuries show the company owns more than 780,000 BTC, with an average purchase price estimated at $75,580 per coin. Earlier in the year, Bitcoin traded below Strategy’s average cost basis, weighing on the holdings; the latest rally has moved the portfolio back into the green by about 3.14%, or roughly $1.8 billion in mark-to-market gains.
With Bitcoin now trading above the average cost basis, Strategy’s treasury strategy is delivering positive returns once again, reinforcing investor enthusiasm for the stock. The company’s Bitcoin holdings are currently valued at about $56 billion, underscoring the scale of its bet on the cryptocurrency market.
Leverage to Bitcoin drives stock gains
Strategy’s stock performance remains highly sensitive to Bitcoin moves, amplifying gains when prices rise and losses when they retreat. The leverage on the crypto position is evident in the balance sheet dynamics: for every $1,000 uptick in Bitcoin’s price, the value of Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings increases by roughly $780 million.
That sensitivity matters for risk and upside: if Bitcoin were to rebound to its previous all-time high around $126,000, the reported value of Strategy’s holdings could rise to about $98.4 billion, all other factors being equal and without additional coin purchases.
The latest price surge has also attracted stronger retail interest in the stock, a factor that can amplify swings when the crypto market moves decisively in either direction.
Positioning among major Bitcoin holders
Strategy remains among the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin globally and is approaching the scale of major institutional products such as BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin ETF in terms of holdings. The aggressive accumulation, steered by co-founder Michael Saylor, has effectively positioned the company as a pure-play Bitcoin proxy within equity markets.
The rally underscores both potential upside and the inherent volatility of Strategy’s approach. While rising Bitcoin prices can dramatically lift the company’s valuation, the stock’s fortunes remain closely tied to how the cryptocurrency performs in the broader market environment.
As Bitcoin trades near recent highs, investors are likely to monitor the trajectory of the crypto market and its implications for Strategy’s balance sheet and share price.
