Aramex, Netzero Launch Smart-Tree Initiative In Saudi Industrial Cities

Aramex teams with Saudi startup Netzero for smart afforestation in Riyadh and Jeddah

Logistics firm Aramex has entered a partnership with Saudi afforestation technology company Netzero to plant and digitally monitor trees across industrial zones in Riyadh and Jeddah. The initiative aims to contribute to national greening targets and to provide Aramex with auditable environmental metrics that can feed into its wider sustainability commitments.

The programme will focus on species chosen for resilience in arid environments, including Neem and Poinciana, with planting sites selected in urban and industrial areas where shading and air-quality improvements can offer local benefits. Netzero’s platform digitises tree lifecycles and uses AI and machine-learning tools to log, track and estimate carbon sequestration, giving corporate partners continuous records of their afforestation activities.

Why this matters for corporate ESG and Saudi national goals

Saudi Arabia has accelerated its environmental agenda in recent years, with initiatives such as the Saudi Green Initiative setting an ambitious target for large-scale tree planting. Corporate programmes are expected to play a role in meeting national objectives and in demonstrating private-sector engagement with Vision 2030 priorities.

For Aramex, the partnership provides a concrete way to show progress against publicised targets: the company has previously outlined goals of achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2030 and net-zero emissions globally by 2050. Beyond headline commitments, the ability to generate verifiable data on green interventions is increasingly important for compliance, investor scrutiny and customer expectations.

Technology, transparency and the promise of auditable impact

Netzero’s Nabatik platform underpins the project by creating a digital registry of planted trees and automating measurement and verification processes. According to the developer, AI-driven analytics estimate sequestration and enable continuous monitoring of tree health and maintenance needs. For corporations, such data can reduce the administrative burden of ESG reporting and help substantiate claims about environmental contributions.

Digital tracking and independent verification can also address a recurring concern in corporate offsetting: the credibility and additionality of projects. While tree planting is a visible and intuitive intervention, questions often arise about long-term survival, maintenance funding and whether planting activities deliver real, incremental carbon benefits. A digital trail that documents planting, upkeep and growth trajectories can strengthen the evidentiary basis for reporting and third-party audits.

    Operational and environmental trade-offs

Implementing afforestation in desert-adjacent urban industrial zones presents practical challenges. Species selection, irrigation needs, soil preparation and ongoing maintenance all affect survival rates and the scale of environmental benefits. Neem and Poinciana are commonly used in arid landscaping for their drought tolerance and canopy effects, but ensuring long-term establishment usually requires upfront investment in site preparation and follow-on care.

From a corporate perspective, these factors translate into operational costs and logistical planning. For a company with dense operational footprints in industrial parks, integrating tree-planting programmes into site management, security and supply-chain activities will be necessary to protect planted areas and maximise local community benefits. The data generated by monitoring platforms can help optimise maintenance cycles and reveal where interventions are underperforming.

    Implications for the logistics sector

The move by Aramex signals a broader trend of logistics and industrial firms adopting visible environmental actions that are tied to data products. As regulators and investors press for more granular ESG disclosures, companies in asset-heavy sectors are looking for interventions that are both tangible and traceable.

However, afforestation should be viewed as one element in a wider decarbonisation strategy. While tree planting can contribute to local environmental quality and can be part of corporate offset portfolios, it does not replace operational emissions reductions from fleet electrification, energy efficiency and fuel-switching. The credibility of corporate sustainability programmes increasingly depends on combining on-site mitigation with measurable emissions reductions in core operations.

Bottom line: Aramex’s partnership with Netzero aligns corporate action with national greening priorities and attempts to address a perennial problem in corporate climate programmes – verification. The initiative highlights how digital tools are being used to make environmental interventions more transparent, but it also underscores the operational commitments required to translate planting into durable environmental outcomes.
