Al‑Futtaim Engineering has completed the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) scope for the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) in Expo City Dubai, securing a Building Completion Certificate and operational readiness after an intensive nine‑month programme. The work, carried out on behalf of the Dubai World Trade Centre, came ahead of key international events such as Arab Health and Gulfood.
The contractor says the delivery constitutes one of the fastest and most complex MEP rollouts undertaken in the region. The programme involved more than four million man‑hours and the mobilisation of a sizeable workforce at peak: around 200 engineering and management staff augmented by some 2,000 skilled tradespeople.
Scope, scale and methods
The contract required a heavy services backbone to support high‑volume exhibition activity. Al‑Futtaim Engineering installed roughly 90 kilometres of low‑voltage cabling, 11 kilometres of busbars and around 100,000 square metres of air‑conditioning ductwork. Additional infrastructure included an estimated 120 kilometres of fibre‑optic backbone, about 110 kilometres of electrical uPVC ducting and some 105 kilometres of plumbing and chilled water pipework. The fit‑out also comprised more than 18,000 lighting fixtures.
To meet the compressed schedule, the team deployed parallel working strategies. High‑level and low‑level MEP activities were executed concurrently using suspended access platforms with restricted load capacities, supported by tight sequencing, centralised material logistics and controlled lifting plans. The contractor emphasised rigorous safety controls throughout the programme.
Advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM) served as the primary coordination tool. The digital model was used across electrical, HVAC, plumbing, ELV and fire and life safety systems to reduce clashes and limit rework, the company said. Extensive BIM use also aided testing and commissioning phases, helping to compress traditional handover timelines.
