Business leaders in Cairo outline path for Arab private sector

Artificial intelligence is moving from pilot projects to a strategic economic lever for private companies across the Arab world, industry figures said at a recent forum in Cairo. The event, convened by Orient Planet Group at the Al-Ahram Establishment, brought together corporate executives, economists and technology specialists to discuss how AI will influence productivity, investment flows and the future of work in the region.

Speaking at the forum, Dr. Nidal Abou Zaki, Founder and Managing Director of Orient Planet Group, described AI as more than a technological novelty, framing it instead as a direct driver of growth and competitiveness. He cited forecasts projecting the global AI market to reach about USD 4.8 trillion by 2033 and said a large share of international organisations already incorporate AI in at least one business function. These figures were offered to underline how rapidly AI is being embedded across corporate operations worldwide.

From data tools to strategic economic asset

Panelists argued that the conversation must move beyond tools and efficiency gains to recognise data and AI as strategic assets. Dr. Abou Zaki emphasised that organisations now compete on their ability to collect, govern and monetise data, not only on traditional product or service differentials. For companies in the region, that means investments in secure data infrastructure, governance frameworks and analytics capabilities are becoming central to competitive strategy.

Implication for businesses: Firms that treat data as an operational byproduct risk ceding advantage to competitors that systematically capture value from data-driven decision making, personalised services and automated processes.

Regional economic shift and the production imperative

Speakers used regional labour and GDP data to highlight the stakes. Dr. Abou Zaki noted that the private sector is a major employer in Egypt and a key growth engine across the Arab world, and pointed to rising shares of non-oil economic activity in Gulf states as evidence of the region’s broader diversification. He argued that the next phase of competitiveness will not only depend on consuming imported technologies but also on producing and exporting AI capabilities.

That transition from consumption to production is fundamental, according to the forum. Countries that build domestic AI ecosystems — through startups, research, talent retention and venture investment — will be better positioned to attract capital and capture the high-value margins of digital industries.

Policy implication: Governments seeking to accelerate value capture should prioritise R&D incentives, IP protection, and public-private programs that link universities, incubators and industry.

    Workforce change, risks and realignment

On talent, the forum drew attention to recent projections that large shares of existing skills sets will shift over the next five years and that a substantial portion of jobs globally could face disruption from digital transformation. Dr. Abou Zaki warned against simplistic narratives of mass displacement, arguing instead that AI will restructure roles and elevate demand for skills such as data analysis, critical thinking and AI literacy, alongside human-centred abilities like creativity and leadership.

At the same time, speakers cautioned about implementation risks. Without clear strategy and institutional readiness, they said, many AI initiatives will fail to deliver expected returns. The forum referenced industry estimates that a high percentage of AI projects do not reach projected ROI when deployed without governance, change management and scalable integration plans.

    Governance, cybersecurity and responsible AI

Participants also discussed the governance challenges that accompany rapid AI adoption. Data protection, cybersecurity, and responsible AI use were identified as immediate priorities for both companies and regulators. Establishing standards for transparency and accountability, while balancing innovation incentives, will be a central policy challenge as private sector adoption accelerates.

Sector takeaway: Businesses should pair technical deployment with governance frameworks and workforce transition plans to reduce project failure risk and build stakeholder trust.

    International models and strategic recommendations

Forum speakers examined external models of technological catch-up, pointing to countries such as Singapore and parts of Eastern Europe that combined targeted skills development, infrastructure investment and supportive regulation to climb the value chain. The message to Arab policymakers and corporate boards was consistent: adopt a systems view that links education, capital, regulation and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Abou Zaki framed the moment as a historic opportunity for Arab economies to deepen digital infrastructure, strengthen innovation ecosystems and scale human capital investments. For the private sector, the imperative is to move from opportunistic pilots to enterprise-wide AI strategies that align technology adoption with measurable business outcomes.

As regional firms and governments calibrate next steps, the forum highlighted a practical reality: the competitive gap between digitally prepared organisations and those that lag is likely to widen, making timely strategic action essential for firms that aim to thrive in an AI-driven global economy.
